Studies show that children start using ICT and web services at an early age. Online media offers a great range of possibilities for different people, so accessibility and user-oriented approaches are important factors to take into account when designing web services. This is why it is important to take children into account as users of internet, web services and other online media.

According to a recent statistical research about children and young peopleĀ“s free time in Finland, among 7-9 year olds, the most common ways to use the internet is to read or watch content produced by other users, for example on YouTube (84 per cent). This highlights the notion that the internet and web content is global in its nature in a sense that people can use them around the globe. Other popular web activities are playing games (77 per cent), information gathering (66 per cent) and sharing pictures and videos with friends or family (53 per cent). According to the study, children and young people use the internet and digital media diversely and there are different approaches in how and what content is used online.
