Calendar of SIC milestones and events in 2019/2020

Safer Internet Centres (SICs) in Europe have a range of milestones and events already planned for the year ahead, and are constantly adding more. Click on the map below to see planned activities by country, or browse by month below that.

February

Austria

  • Celebration of the Safer Internet Day across Austria.
  • Publication of the Safer Internet Day study about "Digital stress of youth".

Bulgaria

  • New awareness campaign against hate speech online "You are the hero: Together for a better internet", including a video based on an idea and storyboard developed by the Youth panel. The call for action will be to all teenagers to make a selfie with some sort of superhero attribute and post it on social networks as a sign of support.
  • Media Literacy Days will take place through to 15 March 2019 with various activities and initiatives by the 15 organisations who are members of the Coalition for Media Literacy in Schools founded by the Bulgarian SIC in 2017.
  • A national competition for teenagers for videos under the motto "Don't fake with me" dedicated to fake news and information online will run until 10 March 2019.
  • A schools campaign against hate speech online: lesson plans and a plan for parents' meetings, developed by the SIC, will be distributed to schools.
  • 23 February 2019 - Parents Academy on the theme: "When to let my child use the internet and how to lead him/her through the digital experience".
  • End of February (date to be decided) - Youth Forum against hate speech online.

Denmark

  • SID 2019 event at Usserød School, including the launch of a new online resource on GDPR from a youth perspective.
  • Launch of an updated guide for parents on children's online life.

Estonia

  • Safer internet Day 2019 celebrations, including:
    • On 5 February 2019, a conference titled "Where are you going, digital child? EU Kids Online 2018 results in Estonia". The conference was organised by the Estonian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences of University of Tartu.
    • A creative works competition for students from 1-14 February 2019. Students were invited to create memes on what make them happy or worried in the digital world.
    • Publication of a thematic online magazine, Smartly on the Web.
    • In addition, in January, a package of awareness-raising materials and methods was sent to all schools and kindergartens inviting them to organise events to celebrate Safer Internet Day.

France

  • Launching SID with an event at the Ministry of Education on 4 February 2019. The event will include:
    • a global presentation of the new phase of the programme, and resources offered for SID
    • a pilot workshop with a class of the interactive quiz "les écrans, les autres et moi".
  • Other actions organised involve Google (on 04/02), Respect Zone (on 04/02), Facebook (on 05/02).
  • New resources launching on SID include:
    • A dialogue between adults and teens on their digital life, and coconstruct rules.
    • A resource for schools and informal education (ages 7-12).
    • A resource for schools and informal education (ages 13-17)
    • A quiz for parents, to launch the debate at home.
  • Hundreds of workshops being registered.

Germany

  • Celebration of Safer Internet Day across Germany, including klicksafe press event at a school in Düsseldorf focusing on online hate speech.
  • New video series with popular YouTubers on hate speech online.
  • Publication of survey results about hate speech.
  • klicksafe info booth at education trade fair didacta.
  • School visit of Commissioner Gabriel together with filmmaker, Wim Wenders, German Federal Minister For Family Affairs, Franziska Giffey, and LMK director, Marc Jan Eumann, organised by klicksafe at a school in Berlin on Monday, 11 February 2019.

Greece

  • The results of major nationwide research in about 400 primary and secondary schools all over Greece will be announced. An infographic will also be created on the main results of the study.
  • The winners of the Pan-Hellenic student competitions will be announced. Students from all educational levels are invited, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, to work together as well as with their teachers in order to create original material for internet safety.
  • A major event will be organised on the day of Safer Internet Day 2019 at the amphitheatre of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs (with a capacity of 800 people), in which all involved actors and many students will participate. During the event, an active role will be played by the Youth panel with activities and speeches.
  • New material will be available to students, educators and parents to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2019.
  • Informative sessions across the country for parents, students and teachers.

Hungary

  • A video competition for youth aged 6-18 will be launched, in three different age categories, in line with the theme of SID 2019.

Latvia

  • Launching of a campaign to promote a new mobile app for reporting breaches and illegal content online, mainly focusing on child protection - dealing with cyberbullying cases, removing child sexual abuse images, and helping parents to find the best solution in situations where a child has suffered online.

Luxembourg

  • Collaboration with European Consumer Center (CEC) (06/02/2019): Conference on "dating platforms and social networks" at Maison de l'Europe.
  • BEE SECURE DigiRallye winter edition (20/02/2019) at Forum Geesseknäppchen.

March

Austria

  • Publication of the Austrian youth internet monitor asking young people from 11-17 what online networks they are using.

Denmark

  • Launch of a resource with activities about children and youth online life for parents' meetings in schools.
  • 13-14 March 2019 – School Festival in Copenhagen, to include the distribution of the resource "The internet as a platform for lies, manipulation and propaganda" and new activities for parents about the online life of children and youth.

Germany

  • New teaching material klicksafe2go: "How we want to live. Chances and risks of digital future" about the influence of AI (artificial intelligence) and social bots on our decisions and lives, including digital currencies and blockchains.
  • New information areas on the klicksafe website about self-endangering behaviour (eating disorders, suicide) in cooperation with jugendschutz.net.
  • New online quiz for young people on fake news.
  • klicksafe booth at TINCON, festival for digital youth culture in Düsseldorf.
  • Three new translations of the checklist for parents "When is my child ready for their own smartphone?" (Turkish, Arabic, Russian).
  • New online quiz for young people on the topic of "No stress on WhatsApp".

Greece

  • Awareness campaign during European Media Literacy Week, 18-22 March 2019.
  • Video on fake news promoting media literacy which will be spread through social media and TV broadcasts
  • Event for fake news at the amphitheater of the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas on 14 March 2019.
  • Event on online safety for educators in Argyroupoli.
  • Webinar to educators.
  • Visits to schools.
  • New online quizzes about fake news.

Latvia

  • Development of a 6-hour long "Internet addiction" training programme for pedagogues. Training will be provided throughout whole year.
  • A media event will be organised, in cooperation with the State Police, to inform about the results of a project where a person searching for child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) is directed to a STOP page informing about the criminal liabilities of searching and storing such illegal content.

Luxembourg

  • Collaboration with Advisory Board member National Consumer Center (ULC) (11/03/2019): Conference on the impact of digitalisation on individual consumers.

April

Estonia

  • Organisation of 10 eSafety workshops in schools.

Hungary

  • Taking place from 8-12 April 2019, Digital Theme Week will be organised all across the country. This week has been established by the Hungarian Government, the coordinator of which is the Ministry of Human Capacity. The Hungarian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) will hold "Safe surf" lessons and forums for parents during the week.

Latvia

  • A story telling contest "Your internet safety story" will be organised for 7-9 grade school children. In the summer, workshops will be organised for the contestants to develop visual design of their stories. In September, a book of internet safety stories will be disseminated to schools along with methodological materials for pedagogues.
  • The Latvian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) will participate in a popular TV show in Latvia for school children, "Clever the cleverest", asking questions about internet safety.

Luxembourg

  • Collaboration with Videogames.lu - information booth at the event "Gamingevent Reloaded" (27/04/2019).

Malta

  • BeSmartOnline! has teamed up with ŻfinMalta, the national dance company, to carry out a roadshow in schools which will use dance and creativity to convey various messages about online risks (such as digital footprints, online grooming and cyberbullying). The production aims to encourage children to discuss these issues with their peers, parents and educators. It is also recommended that the issues raised through the production are discussed during a PSCD (Personal Social Career Development) lesson. The roadshow runs throughout April and May.

Slovenia

  • 4 April 2019: The Slovenian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) will be participating at the exhibition place and within a panel discussion at the Cultural Bazaar, organised jointly by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, the National Education Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning and the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO, as well as numerous Slovenian cultural institutions. The aim of this event is to provide information on cultural events taking place throughout Slovenia, and to stimulate interest in the arts and cultural education.

May

Estonia

  • Launch of two lesson plans on how to tackle cyberbullying, aimed at teachers of students in 5th-7th grades.
  • Organisation of workshops for kindergarten children in Võru County.
  • Development of 10 study objects and an eSafety poster for students on best practices and habits in the classroom (this activity will take place from May until September 2019).

Germany

  • klicksafe booth at Deutscher Präventionstag (German Congress on Crime Prevention) in Berlin.

Greece

  • Creation and publication of a new leaflet for online gaming.
  • Creation and publication of leaflets of the results of the major nationwide research in about 400 primary and secondary schools all over Greece, and of the work that has been done during the last three years of the project.
  • Cooperation with ENISA for European Cyber Security Month (ECSM).
  • Informative events in primary schools in Peloponissos.

Hungary

  • Budapest Children's Day will take place 25-26 May 2019, and will feature a Safer Internet Tent with all sponsors, stakeholders and partners participating. Offering interactive programmes for children, youth and adults. More than 10,000 visitors are expected to the tent over the two days of the event.

Luxembourg

  • Information and animation stand with a focus on families at "Fête de l'Europe" in Luxembourg City (09/05/2019).
  • Information and animation stand with focus on young people at "Teenage Dream Party" organised by Nordstadjugend asbl (24/05/2019).

Slovenia

  • 30 May 2019: Conclusion of the Safe.si Award Contest for primary schools. The winners will be invited to a final event in Ljubljana.

June

Estonia

  • A conference titled "Cybersecurity and Artificial Reality" will take place on 12 June 2019. The conference is organised by the Estonian SIC's consortium partner, Tallinn University of Technology.

Germany

  • Presentation of klicksafe cyberbullying teaching material at World Anti Bullying Forum in Dublin.

Greece

  • Two major informative events with the participation of 600 teachers in cooperation with the regional directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Athens.
  • Three webinars: one for Ambassadors, one for the Youth Panel to organise actions for the new school year, and one for teachers. 
  • Preparation and submission to the Greek Ministry οf Education of a new survey on how kids social media can impact body image, and on online gaming.
  • Events addressed to educators, psychologists and doctors, all over Athens, during June and July.

Luxembourg

  • Collaboration with Advisory Board member A.F.P. Services Asbl - Erzéiongs- a Familljeberodung (04/06/2019): Public event at the World Play Day. Several organisations, including BEE SECURE, will provide offline games and activities to further the sense of playing together. Everyone, especially children and families, are invited to come along and have fun.

July/August

Bulgaria

  • Training of teenagers on methods for peer-to-peer education on online safety on 12 July 2019, near the city of Razlog.
  • Official opening of a multimedia studio to be used by the Youth panel and other young people who are being trained in journalistic skills for production of content for the youth media platform Teen Station on 17 July 2019 at Software University in Sofia.
  • Training of pedagogues and professionals on Internet and Trafficking of Human Beings on 30 July 2019 in the city of Varna.

Estonia

  • An extended youth panel summer seminar will take place 27-29 August 2019.

Germany

  • Webinar for multipliers (topic to be confirmed).
  • New practical, recipient-oriented formats to take up on recent trends (e.g. smart speakers).

Greece

  • Play and learn - summer edition for small kids.
  • Update of materials on existing main topics. 
  • Informative events at children's camps.
  • Preparation of new material about digital consent and how social media can impact body image.

Luxembourg

  • BEE SECURE DigiRallye summer edition at Campus Geesseknäppchen (24/07/2019).

September

Bulgaria

  • Annual Back2School campaign, consisting of the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) preparing lesson plans and presentations for different age groups which are then sent to teachers who conduct the activity with their pupils and then provide feedback to the SIC. In return for the feedback, schools then receive additional resources such as guidebooks, posters, leaflets and stickers. The whole month of September is dedicated to the campaign, with dissemination of  materials to schools from 1 September 2019, while teachers will conduct lessons with pupils from 1st to 12th grade from 15 September 2019 through to 10 October 2019.

Germany

  • New teaching material "Mobile Media" about YouTube influencers as role models, learning on YouTube, and so on.

Greece

  • Launch of new educational material for students of every educational grade, as part of Back to School activities. Emphasis is given on the body image teenagers build through their engagement with social media, without missing out on other critical issues such as excessive use of the internet, online games, cyberbullying, contact with strangers, and so on.
  • Participation in the Positive Online Content Campaign through social media activity and web content on the Greek Safer Internet Centre's website. 
  • Multiple informal events to educators. 
  • Participation in the Researchers Night 2019, hosted at Forth, Heraklion, Crete.
  • Participation at the 3rd Festival Robotics and Steam. 
  • Webinar to 100 educators about safe online gaming. 
  • Publication of the new e-book "Digiduck's famous friend" (translated into Greek from a resource created by Childnet, part of the UK Safer Internet Centre (SIC)).
  • Design of new resource on cyber-hygiene.

Slovenia

  • 17 September 2019: The 9th edition of the annual hotline conference on child abuse online. The main aim of the conference is to educate representatives from public institutions, NGO's, academies, ISPs and individuals about child abuse on the internet and to connect them in preventive and curative activities while dealing with this issue.

October

Germany

  • Publication of a new thematic series on youths' media usage trends, addressed to parents.

Greece

  • Coordination with ENISA for celebrating European Cyber Security Month (ECSM) in Greece. 
  • Big educational event at FORTH for promoting cyber-hygiene to students. 
  • Coordination with Stavros Niarxos Foundation for informative events to students.
  • Development and promotion of educational material for European Cyber Security Month (ECSM).
  • Informative events to schools.

Hungary

  • European Cyber Security Month (ECSM). The main organiser in Hungary is the National Cybersecurity Institute. The Safer Internet Centre will participate in conferences and roundtables, and will organise a workshop.
  • Media Conference, Budapest. Every second year, the Hungarian SIC organises a conference about media literacy focusing on the latest trends and research with key experts in the field.

Luxembourg 

  • Launch of the BEE SECURE awareness raising campaign on disinformation #checkyourfacts (02/10/2019).
  • Conference about data protection and privacy in collaboration with advisory Board member RESTENA (17/10/2019).
  • Conference about gender equality in collaboration with the Ministry of Equal Rights (17/10/2019).

November

Austria

  • Publication of safer internet information materials for the kindergartens in Austria. This includes teaching materials, workshops, specially trained trainers, parent folders, and so on.

Bulgaria

  • National campaign "Teacher-leader in the digital era".

France

  • Back to school/"Non au harcèlement" campaign, as well as education week.

Germany
