Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre teams up with an IT Academy

During 2016, the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) has established a fruitful partnership with IT Step Academy Bulgaria - a large organisation where grown-ups and children alike go to develop their IT skills.

The partnership began in April when the Bulgarian SIC organised a youth public debate on whether it is acceptable for teenagers to upload sexy selfies or not. The IT Step Academy agreed to host the event as it is very interested in all aspects of use of the internet by children and young people. After the debate, the idea of possible long-term partnership occurred.

IT Step organises summer schools for children aged 10-12. Experts from the Bulgarian SIC often lead lessons with pupils from that age group, during which they discuss the main dangers online and the ways of preventing those dangers from occurring. Thus it was decided that the SIC should be included in the summer school programme for children of that age.

The skills that children are taught during the IT Step Academy summer school include video editing, programming and web development. Use of the internet and different channels of online communication, along with some of the risks of using social networks and mobile apps, were not previously included per se – that's why the Bulgarian SIC will now be included in the summer school with the module ‘Online risks and the ways of preventing them'. The module will be delivered to seven groups of children during summer 2016.
