Safer Internet Day 2019 activities by APLE Cambodia

APLE Cambodia, an NGO focused on the fight against child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE), operates an internet reporting platform allowing the public to report suspected CSAE.

The hotline provides a crucial link in the protective chain of interventions against CSAE. Reporting of suspected incidents enables the possibility for reported child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to be removed, the ongoing crime to be disrupted, the victim to be rescued and/or supported, the prosecution of the perpetrator and thereby the possible prevention of new or repeated cases. In 2018, APLE's internet hotline received 67 report: 53 online cases and 12 offline cases, which included sextortion, online child abuse material and online child sexual abuse material.

Recognising the need to increase the awareness among the public, APLE included Online Child Sexual Exploitation (OCSE) in its Community Engagement Programme to raise awareness among vulnerable children, youth, parents, caretakers and professionals. Additionally, this helps raise awareness of the hotline among the general public. APLE understands that although children have knowledge on how to operate devices and use social media, they need guidance to shape their attitudes and behaviour online, as well as identify risks and potential threats to their security.

Hence, in 2019, APLE promoted a Safer Internet Day (SID) event via its own social media platforms which focused on online safety with participants sharing their experience and lessons through live photos and videos.
