AWARENESS

Within the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs), National Awareness Centres (NACs) focus on raising awareness and understanding of safer internet issues and emerging trends.

They run campaigns to empower children, young people, parents, carers and teachers with the skills, knowledge and strategies to stay safe online and take advantage of the opportunities that the internet and mobile technologies provide.

The network also works extensively with other stakeholders, such as the research community, industry and other NGOs, to extend the reach of key messages and awareness-raising actions.

Nettivihje hotline in Finland: Fighting sexual crimes against children on the web

Images are gaining in importance in the social world online. The ever faster digitalisation has increased the amount and use of imagery uploaded online. For example, the number of video clips and images that children and adolescents produce using web cameras, smartphones and other mobile devices has exploded (HS 29 Nov. 2014). The rising number of sexualising videos recorded and photographs taken by adolescents themselves, and the uncontrolled dissemination of this kind of material to inappropriate or criminal use, have caused particular concern.

New online courses promote digital skills and games in schools

The European Schoolnet Academy is a platform where you can learn about innovation in the school and classroom through online professional development courses for teachers in primary and secondary schools. Many of the courses focus on developing digital literacy skills which, for both teachers and pupils, can be an essential aspect of helping to contribute to a better internet. What will GOW 2016 be like this year?

Digital empowerment campaign European Get Online Week (GOW) will mark its seventh edition this year on 14-20 March.
