The school year 2020/2021 will not start like any other. COVID-19 is still the dominating topic and whether a regular operation of schools under special conditions linked to the pandemic will succeed remains to be seen. One thing is already clear however: this year, teachers will have to deal more closely with the topics of digitisation and internet use. The German awareness centre klicksafe therefore offers an overview of materials and services enabling teachers to start the new school year competently and well informed.

Use video chats safely

It remains to be seen whether it will be possible to provide classroom instruction throughout the school year 2020/2021. Teaching via videoconferencing is one way of maintaining contact when meetings in the classroom are not possible. Some security aspects must be taken into account in advance. With this overview page and the corresponding checklist, teachers can create safe online lessons.

The material "Through the Year with klicksafe" gives teachers in elementary school ideas for the school year, so that they can integrate monthly units of media education into the school year planning. The twelve units and two additional projects are suitable for grades 2-6. The basic objectives of media literacy promotion in elementary school are to make positive content for children known, to enable children to use the internet and its content in a self-competent and safe manner and to encourage them to use the Internet creatively.

Many children come into contact with digital technologies at an early age. For this reason, klicksafe and the German project Internet ABC have created teaching materials for children who are not or only slightly literate (suitable for grades 1-2). With hidden object pictures as well as simple handicraft and work assignments, the interactive booklet offers a lot of space for a creative examination of one's own media use. The accompanying booklet for teachers contains detailed information on how to complete the tasks and on media-pedagogical objectives.

The training material "Everything smart?! - Voice control and networking everywhere" is based on the peer-to-peer approach. At schools that work with peer education programs, young people can be sensitised by their peers to the safe use of smart and networked devices. The explanatory film "Siri, Alexa & Co.: Opportunities and risks of language assistants" by klicksafe is also available to accompany the working material.

Young people also want to use audiovisual forms of learning in class and, for example, critically reflect on YouTube videos. These media needs of young people must be recognised and taken into account in the design of educational offerings. There are many channels on YouTube with school content that are suitable for use in class as well as for learning at home. This overview features a selection of recommendable content and also suggestions on how teachers can become active themselves and create learning videos.

Especially at the beginning of the school year many new class chats are established. They are problematic from a data protection point of view, especially if insecure services are used or messengers that are not yet allowed for children. In any case, it is important to define common rules for use as early as possible in the classroom. A lack of netiquette and time or topic restrictions often lead to cyberbullying or stress in class chat groups and have a negative impact on the class atmosphere. klicksafe offers materials that teachers and students can use to support them in dealing with class chats.

How can young people deal with cyberbullying when they themselves are affected? Where can they turn to if they do not want to confide in their families or teachers directly? In order to support young people in dealing with cyberbullying, members of the klicksafe Youth Panel have developed the Cyberbullying First Aid App in 2016. The German Awareness Centre klicksafe is publishing the app and the corresponding klicksafe flyer Was tun bei Cyber-Mobbing? ("What to do about cyberbullying?") in a new design and with new content.

14th international conference "Keeping children and young people safe online" – Take part in the workshops!
