October is European Cyber Security Awareness Month

Every October, we celebrate European Cyber Security Month (ECSM), a campaign aiming to promote the importance of information security among citizens and organisations, by sharing simple steps that can be taken to better protect their personal, financial and/or professional data.

This EU-wide awareness campaign is designed and implemented by the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA), the European Commission's Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), and a wide variety of partners. It is organised in parallel with the Stop.Think.Connect. campaign in the United States.

The ECSM stems from the Cybersecurity Strategy of the European Union, published in 2013 by the European Commission and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, with the aim of making "the EU's online environment the safest in the world".

The 2019 campaign, entitled "Building together a joint EU awareness campaign on NIS topics!", will cover the entire month of October, with ENISA and ECSM partners sharing reports, organising events and activities. The campaign will focus on two main topics, divided as follows:

  • Week 1 and 2 (Tuesday, 1 October to Sunday, 13 October): Cyber Hygiene – This theme aims to assist the public in adopting daily routines, checks and behaviours required to stay safe online.
  • Week 3 and 4 (Monday, 14 October to Thursday, 31 October): Emerging Technology.

Teaching children better cyber hygiene practices is an integral part of Better Internet for Kids (BIK) and Insafe activities. In 2018, the BIK team worked with ENISA and the European Commission's Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) to develop learning modules for teachers called "Get Cyber Skilled" as part of the #SaferInternet4EU campaign.

You can also find educational resources for children of all ages on the topics of cyber security and cyber hygiene on the BIK repository.
