10 years celebrating Data Protection Day

Data Protection Day (or Data Privacy Day, as it is known outside of Europe) is a global, annual celebration marking the anniversary of the signing of the Council of Europe's Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection, on 28 January 1981.

On 26 April 2006, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe launched Data Protection Day which has been celebrated ever since, on 28 January.

The theme for 10th edition of the day is ‘Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust' aimed at raising awareness of how personal data is collected and processed and what are the implications of this process. Additionally, the goal of the day is to help all users to understand what their rights are and ways to protect their personal data.

As we are now in the final countdown to Safer Internet Day (taking place this year on Tuesday, 9 February 2016), celebrating Data Protection Day allows us to reflect on the importance of data protection in order to achieve a better internet, where safety and trust are solid pillars as well as the role we all have to play to ensure such an online environment.
