Training day for CyberSafety Youth Panel in Cyprus

Within the framework of the European co-funded project ‘CΥberSafety – Better Internet for Kids' (  the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute of the Ministry of Education and Culture organised a training day for the members of the CYberSafety Youth Panel, Cyprus. The training day was held at the campus of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia on Saturday, 2 February 2019, and was attended by forty students.

The CYberSafety Youth Panel of the Cyprus Safer Internet Centre (SIC) aims to enable participants to share knowledge and experiences, and to formulate suggestions and actions regarding the creative and safe use of digital technologies and the internet. The CYberSafety Youth Panel of Cyprus is composed of members of the Cyprus Children's Parliament, which was coordinated by the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for the Protection and Welfare of Children (PCCPWC), members of the Teenage Advisers' Group of the Commissioner for Children's Rights, and students from the Little Explorers of the Internet and EduWeb Cyprυs programmes, under the coordination of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute.

During the training day, the participants learned more about the European project "CYberSafety – Better Internet for Kids", the Helpline and Hotline 1480, the National Strategy for a Better Internet for the Children of Cyprus, and the expected role they are invited to undertake in the framework of the CYberSafety Youth Panel. They also heard interesting presentations and suggestions from the CYberSafety partners.

The participants had the opportunity to discuss with Dr Thanasis Hadzilakos, a professor at the Open University of Cyprus, on their responsibility to help enable a creative, responsible and critical use of digital technologies and the internet. They also participated in workshops on misinformation and digital footprints, and watched a theatrical performance about cyberbullying called "George's Room" by the theatrical group "Intra Portas".
