Insafe network meets to discuss the sexualisation of children and childhood online

Today, the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres begins a two-day meeting in Warsaw, Poland, exchanging knowledge and experience about the latest online issues and trends and how it may impact on the work of Awareness Centres and Helplines in Europe. In particular, this meeting aims to provide opportunities to gain a better understanding of how the internet and social media have contributed to what is referred to as the sexualisation of children and childhood. Attendees will share awareness-raising resources and campaigns from around the network and provide opportunities to collaborate on new projects and ideas.

Throughout the meeting, 90 participants will hear from international experts in the field, such as Tink Palmer from from the Marie Collins Foundation on ‘The sexualisation of childhood' and Alan Earl from the UK Safer Internet Centre on ‘Sextortion and sexual bad behaviour in a digital world'. The meeting will also hear updates from ASKfm and YouTube in the now customary ‘Updates from industry session'. In addition, there will be sessions on the Safer Internet Day 2016, youth participation in internet governance issues and recent helpline case studies.

Insafe network coordinator, Hans Martens said: "It is with great pleasure that we welcome our Insafe colleagues to this training meeting. Together with key stakeholders in the field, we look forward to two intensive days of discussion and sharing of good practices. It is through this open and collaborative model that Insafe will continue to foster, for many years to come, critical thinking skills, online creativity and digital wellbeing across and beyond Europe."
