October is European Cyber Security Month

European Cyber Security Month (ECSM) is a trans-European information campaign launched in October 2012 by the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA).

It has been celebrated in the Czech Republic every October since its inception. The campaign promotes cyber security among citizens and advocates for change in the perception of cyber-threats by promoting data and information security, education, sharing of good practices and competitions.

So why has the Czech National Safer Internet Centre (SIC), with its main focus on internet safety issues, joined the campaign? The answer is simple: to take advantage of the synergy coming out of the common goals of our efforts. The Czech SIC also strives to generate general awareness about cyber security, which is one of the priorities identified in the EU Cyber Security Strategy: to promote safer use of the internet for all users; to build a strong track record to raise awareness through the ECSM; and last but not least, to involve relevant stakeholders.

Among the main themes of the 2015 ECSM campaign, the Czech SIC has identified two very important ones: ‘Code Week for all' and ‘Digital Single Market for all'.

The Digital Single Market is the environment which requires digital skills and the ability to enter a secure cyberspace and use it safely.

The EU Code Week is a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of how coding can help people to develop both technical and transferable skills for life. It especially addresses young people, increasing their understanding of living in the digital age, enhancing their digital literacy skills, and helping them to become more resilient against threats they may encounter in cyberspace.
