#GoBlue for Universal Children's Day

Today, Tuesday, 20 November 2018, we celebrate Universal Children's Day, a global event organised by the United Nations to promote and raise awareness about children's rights worldwide.

This day marks the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and in 1989 when the UNGA adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (the most widely ratified human rights treaty). The organisation of an international day to promote children's rights was recommended by the UNGA by resolution 836(IX) of 14 December 1954.

This year, the UN and UNICEF have launched a campaign entitled #GoBlue, encouraging children and young people to wearing blue and showing it on social media, sharing the UNICEF promotional video, and signing the global petition for children's right to learn in a safe environment.

For Better Internet for Kids (BIK) and the Insafe network, guaranteeing children's right to learn in a safe environment also applies in the online world. For this reason, we will celebrate the Universal Children's Day by going blue at the Safer Internet Forum (SIF), with this year's edition focusing on "The impact of technology on children, young people and society". Emerging trends and issues will be debated in a series of "deep-dive sessions" on deep fakes, sexting, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), online challenges, or data privacy.

As the #GoBlue campaign aims to empower children and young people to take part in the global discussions on children's rights, we will give a panel of 18 European young people the opportunity to express themselves on online safety- and digital literacy-related matters, by letting them host a "deep-dive session" and take over the @BIK_youth Twitter account.
