Safer Internet Day 2019 celebrations in Brazil

SaferNet Brasil and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br/NIC.br), with the support of Google, Facebook, Instagram and Telefonica, and in partnership with the Federal Prosecutors Office, Twitter and other Brazilian organisations, recently celebrated Safer Internet Day for the eleventh time in Brazil.

In addition to the online buzz, 105 awareness-raising activities took place, directly engaging more than 43,000 young people, parents and educators in 61 different cities and 22 states. The day was heavily featured in the press, with more than 175 news items. Key activities included:

  • A workshop with Instagram youth creators at Facebook Hack Station in São Paulo
  • A multistakeholder Hub event in São Paulo - SP
  • Online safety and privacy debates with Brazilian Startups at Google Campus for Startups Brazil
  • SID Brazil Youth Ambassadors activities in 16 Brazilian states and 19 cities
  • SID colours at Christ the Redeemer at the top of the Corcovado - Rio de Janeiro with face-to-face approach with hundreds of tourist closed the week of activities

In Brazil, the SID 2019 week started with an amazing creative meeting promoted by Instagram with youth creators at Facebook Hack Station São Paulo. Twelve teenagers and youth creators joined SaferNet, Instagram and Facebook Safety team to discuss online experiences related to cyberbullying, and created possible strategies to strengthen positive behaviour and positive content online. This was the first of a series of meetings that will support peers communication to promote respectful relationships and new innovative campaigns for online safety.

The Hub event took place in São Paulo, bringing together key stakeholders including Facebook, Google, Instagram, Telefônica-VIvo, law enforcement agencies, representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Educators, Instagram Creators, well-being researchers and civil society representatives, together for a better internet in Brazil. The meeting had 120 participants and was live-streamed, with the recordings made available both in English and Brazilian Portuguese, viewed by more than 2,000 people during the week.

Online safety and privacy debates for startups at Google Campus for Startups Brazil

This event was inspiring and provided startups with more information on issues related to the new security and privacy challenges on the internet. The new General Data Protection Act, the Civil Internet Framework and the need for greater awareness of internet users were discussed with experts invited by SaferNet, Dinamo and Google. Daniel Arbix, Legal Director of Google Brazil, started the debate around startup scenario with lawyers, cybersecurity specialists, Nubank, iFoof and other startups, mediated by journalists. The meeting had 100 participants and ended with an inspiring remark made by André Barrence, Head of Google for Startups Brazil.

SID Brazil Youth Ambassadors activities in 16 Brazilian states and 19 cities

The second edition of the Brazilian SID youth ambassadors program was a great opportunity to strengthen SID activities around the country. Eighteen youth leaders, from all Brazilian regions, coordinated meetings and mobilisations in their cities as Ambassadors, helping to create news forms of activities and bringing forward new generations as organisers of SID activities. The group also participated in the "Have your Say" project, defining objectives and strategies to work on prioritised goals related to the Smarter Internet. SID colors and activities at Christ the Redeemer monument at Rio de Janeiro

The SID week ended with an amazing meeting at the top of the Corcovado, embraced by the redeeming Christ monument, World heritage site. The SaferNet team, Federal Prosecutors and Youth ambassadors approached hundreds of tourists from around the world with online safety tips and to discuss the role of helplines and hotlines worldwide. QR codes and the giant banner at the foot of the monument linked the tourist to the Global SID website and awareness material in their native languages.

During the tenth celebration of SID in Brazil, SaferNet also announced the publication of the annual report with data from Brazilian Helpline and Hotline, all available at: http://indicadores.safernet.org.br/indicadores.html

This release had great repercussion in the major national newspapers.
