SaferInternet4Kids promotes cyber hygiene

Cyber hygiene is one of the key areas of focus of the #SaferInternet4EU campaign, launched by Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, on Safer Internet Day and continuing throughout 2018 through a series of actions and initiatives. Here, the Greek Safer Internet Centre shares some of the resources it has created on this topic.

Cyber hygiene is often compared to personal hygiene. Much like an individual engages in certain personal hygiene practices to maintain good health and wellbeing, cyber hygiene practices can keep data safe and well protected. In turn, this aids in maintaining properly functioning devices by protecting them from outside attacks, such as malware, which can hinder functionality. Cyber hygiene relates to the practices and precautions users take with the aim of keeping sensitive data organised, safe, and secure from theft and outside attacks.

The Greek Safer Internet Centre has created multimedia material, including brochures and posters, in order to educate children, parents and educators about good practices to follow on issues like cyber hygiene when using the cyber world. This material can be used as a learning tool in the classroom by teachers, but also by parents to inform themselves and then inform their children.

More specifically, the brochures cover:
  • Firewall for computers, phones, and tablets.
  • Antivirus systems.
  • Safety tips and cyber hygiene for mobile phones.
  • How to protect our personal data while using apps.
While the posters cover:
  • How to create a strong password.
  • How to protect from malware.
  • How to protect against phishing.
  • Software updates and malware.
All materials are available to download from the SaferInternet4Kids.gr website (in Greek).
