eSafety Twitter Q&A

From the 1-12 April, the Insafe coordination team is hosting an eTwinning Learning event providing information and tips, as well as fostering debates on eSafety for teachers. eSafety covers a wide range of issues, including cyberbullying, privacy and online reputation. Schools have a key role to play here in terms of providing education to pupils (and possibly parents) in order to provide them with the skills and tools that they need to stay safe online.

The learning event will seek to focus on four key areas:

Cyberbullying
Figures from helplines around Europe have shown that cyberbullying is consistently the issue which young people get in touch about the most – followed closely by issues around privacy and so it is important for teachers to have some understanding about this.

Online relationships
There has been a huge rise in the use of dating sites and apps – not just by adults but young people too – clearly there are huge benefits but also risks. Some young people talk about the pressure that they feel to look or behave a certain way online, online relationships are challenging and as teachers and parents we need to try and understand some of the difficulties that young people can face.

Big Data
What information do our apps collect, do we know what happens to content we post online? Do we need to worry?

Copyright
Copyright has always a challenging area for all of us – not just young people. Many talk about the cut and paste generation and schools are keen to ensure that pupils develop the right digital skills and competences to know how to use content that the find online in the right way.

The final module will consider how to implement some of the lessons in class and participants will be able to choose from a range of lesson plans and then deliver a lesson around one of these issues to their pupils.

In order to provide further visibility to the four topics of the learning event, the Insafe coordination team is also hosting a Twitter Q&A on Thursday, 14 April, at 6-7 pm CEST. All users, in particular teachers interested in knowing more about cyberbullying, online relationships, big data and copyright are invited to ask their questions to the Insafe network on Twitter. Do please tweet directly at us using our Twitter handle, @insafenetwork and the event hashtag #eSafetytalk
