This past Monday was the International Day for Tolerance. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines tolerance as "the willingness to accept feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own." In this day and age, where everyone seems to have an opinion that they want to share, having tolerance can be difficult. It is vitally important to understand that people may have a different opinion than you, may look different than you, or may believe something different than you and that is OK.

Tolerance goes hand-in-hand with the anti-bullying movement currently happening all over the world. This week in particular being ‘Anti-Bullying Week' and this month being Bullying Awareness Month, it is all the more important to stress the concept of tolerance. Intolerance can lead to bullying, which can have detrimental affects to those on the receiving end. If we could all understand that not everyone is going to be just like us, or think the same as us, then maybe bullying can be put to an end once and for all.

Tolerance is something that can be used in our everyday lives to understand and relate to those around us. Tolerance can lead to new friendships, new outlooks on life, and new ways of thinking. If we take one minute to think of how others may view things, we may begin to realise that we all aren't so different after all: we all want our voices heard, we all want to be respected, and we all want to live in a world where everyone has a chance to succeed. So, will you show tolerance to those that may be different than you?
