awareness, helplines, hotlinesSince 1982, when the members of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) decided to commemorate the day on 4 June of each year, it provides an opportunity to raise awareness and acknowledge the pain suffered by children victims of aggression throughout the world. Violence and aggression come in many forms, be it physical, mental or emotional. Any type of violence constitutes a violation of human rights and special provisions against any form of violence against children are enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Unquestionably, this day affirms the UN's commitment to protect the rights of children. Since the emergence of the internet, images of violence and abuse have trespassed into the online world, making it a mission for INHOPE hotlines to work around the clock to identify and delete these images that can affect the victims and the viewers alike. It is clear that, no matter the space, whether offline or online, children need to be protected and have their fundamental rights respected. As a famous saying goes, "it takes a village to raise a child". Hence, the role of parents and carers, but also of society as a whole, is important in ensuring the wellbeing of children.
To that end, the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs) in Europe works with parents and carers to make them aware of online rights, but also online responsibilities that can help their children to use the internet safely and responsibly. Moreover, INHOPE hotlines, which are part of the national SIC, reach out to the whole of society to encourage them to report any illegal content they might come across online and to help make the internet a safer place.
