Looking back at Code Week 2017 in Lithuania

This year, Code Week in Lithuania was celebrated with almost 100 events across the country. From 9-22 October 2017, events of various sizes took place at a variety of locations ranging from the national conference #SWITCH! gathering 15,000 participants with a special focus on medtech and fintech, to local events in schools of remote areas such as Utena city.

Association "Langas į ateitį", the awareness-raising partner of the Lithuanian Safer Internet Centre (SIC), has participated in Code Week activities for several years now, promoting safe and responsible use of technology. With the slogan "CODE=CREATE", events were organised in cooperation with the Robotics school, coding volunteers, Google Lithuania and schools of the Kretinga district. The goal of the initiative was to introduce coding to students as well as provide train-the-trainer activities for primary school teachers, while also promoting safe use of technologies. Topics covered by the various events included:

  • Today's website creation with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP coding languages, introducing different coding languages and website creation steps.
  • Mobile app creation for the Android platform, providing children with an opportunity to create their very first app.
  • Coding with Microbit through a variety of highly practical tasks.
  • Coding languages: Run Marco game, where the youngest users had an opportunity to start simple coding in an interesting way.

The celebrations were a great success - to summarise the involvement of association "Langas į ateitį" in Code Week 2017: four schools, seven events, 463 students (aged 9-14) and 19 teachers. We're already looking forward to next year!
