Teen internet safety: A parent's guide

Here on the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) portal, we're always pleased to hear from different stakeholders on how they contribute to a better and safer internet for children and young people in their own areas of work and activities. As such, we were recently contacted by TOP10VPN, making us aware of their new resource: Teen internet safety: A parent's guide.

In introducing the guide, TOP10VPN writes: "The internet and smartphones are such a ubiquitous part of teen life, yet are part of a technology landscape that's evolving so rapidly that it can feel completely alien to parents. From the dangers of screen addiction to cyberbullying and sexting, today's teenagers have so much more to deal with than ever before."

The guide goes on to cover a range of key topics, such as "Technology and screen addictions", "Cyberbullying", "Digital footprints", "Social networking sites", "Age inappropriate content and sexting" and "Online gaming". Each section includes a series of questions and tip sheets to help parents and carers devise a plan for supporting their children's use of technology, and managing the risks accordingly.

Although US-based in focus, many of the issue covered are of relevance to parents the world over - access the full guide here.
