New Online Safety MOOC for teachers to launch on Safer Internet Day 2018

To coincide with this year's Safer Internet Day celebrations on Tuesday, 6 February 2018, a new edition of the Online Safety MOOC (massive open online course) for teachers, ICT administrators and school counsellors will launch on the European Schoolnet Academy portal, developed in collaboration with the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres.

In a society where technology and the online world are playing an increasingly big role in people's lives, it becomes evident that schools need to be up to speed with the latest online trends and challenges these bring. The MOOC fits into the European Commission's newly announced priorities in terms of developing EU citizens' digital skills and competences meant to prepare them for the "digital transformation".

The Online Safety MOOC will therefore place an even greater importance on the need to develop pupils and students' critical thinking and media literacy skills as one important way to combat the increasing occurrence of fake news. What is more, the course will provide participants with ample resources, strategies, tips and support when it comes to preventing and tackling cases of cyberbullying, hate speech and radicalisation, while also promoting the importance of positive online relationships.

In brief, the course aims to help participants:

  • To understand the importance of providing a safer and better internet for children and young people.
  • To explore the opportunities that the internet provides to access knowledge, communicate and develop skills and creativity.
  • To learn about online safety challenges and how to support children and young people if they encounter difficulties - including practical tips on how to handle cyberbullying, fake news, sexting and online hate speech.
  • To raise awareness of, and signpost to, resources for teaching online safety in schools.
  • To raise awareness of the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) strategy and Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres in Europe.

Registration is now open on the EUN Academy website and further details are available in this one-page document. If you want to spread the word about it and invite colleagues, friends or family to also join this MOOC, take a look at our promo pack full of suggestions on how to disseminate it, together with a set of visuals for social media promotion.
