Back to school in the Netherlands: upcoming media literacy events

Summer holidays are over and the new school year has started –so it's a good opportunity to take a look at the media literacy events coming up in the Netherlands. An overview of campaigns, conferences and other activities for parents, teachers, youngsters and professionals follows - summarised by Mediawijzer.net*, the Dutch centre of expertise for media literacy.

Week Against Bullying
What can we do against (cyber)bullying in schools? How can we recognise it and how can teachers establish a positive atmosphere in the classroom? How do group dynamics work? The Week Against Bullying (Week Tegen Pesten, 19 - 23 September 2016) was all about teachers with this year's theme being ‘you matter' (#jedoetertoe). Read more about the campaign here (in Dutch).
 
Alert Online
Cybersecurity is the responsibility of us all. During the two-week campaign Alert Online 2016, taking place 3-14 October 2016, more than 100 partners will join forces to increase cyber security skills and to make the Netherlands digitally safer. Read more here.
 
Prizes for successful and inspiring media literacy initiatives
Every year, Mediawijzer.net encourages promising, successful and/or inspiring Dutch media literacy initiatives with its Incentive arrangement. For the second time, 15,000 Euro is available for initiatives that have contributed to media literacy in a unique way. Network partners of Mediawijzer.net can apply until 14 October 2016. Codeweek
Over the past couple of years, the importance of learning how to code has become apparent, but how do you start? The Dutch Codeweek (15-23 October 2016) invites organisations, entrepreneurs, libraries, schools and other interested parties to organise a code event. Read more here (in Dutch).
 
Cinekid Festival: Media Literacy Seminar
Together with Cinekid, Mediawijzer.net is organising the international Media Literacy Seminar on 20 October 2016 in Amsterdam. This year's theme is: Cultural Identity Construction. The goal during the seminar is to make educators, mediamakers and producers of educational content aware of the effects that media have on the creation of cultural identity by young people, and also to create an understanding of how young people are creating and finding their own identities in (online) media and communities. Media Literacy Week
This year, the Media Literacy Week (18 - 25 November 2016) revolves around the theme ‘Fact, Fake or Filter: How are you being influenced?'. The yearly Media Literacy Week draws attention to the importance of media literacy for children and youngsters aged 6 - 18. Dozens of activities are organised by libraries, schools and other organisations in the Mediawijzer.net network.
 
Primary schools can play the interactive game MediaMasters (last year, 100,000 pupils registered), while students aged 14-17 are invited to join the My Comment Festival.
 
Medialab Festival
Network partners Cubiss and Cinekid are organising several pop-up festivals in September and November for education specialists, libraries, teachers and students. The festival is an interactive playground with games, virtual reality installations, 3D worlds, coding, apps and workshops. Read more here (in Dutch).
