BIK teamBut this day also reminds us of the importance to safeguard and respect the rights of all people, independent of their race, age, culture, background, education and so on. It is an opportunity for all of us to come together and ‘stand up for someone's rights', to show that we are united in our efforts to have human rights respected. This is actually the slogan of this year's UN campaign to mark Human Rights Day and it mirrors quite well the societal concerns that the worldwide geo-political situation brings upon us.
The UN also proposes a wealth of actions that we can do to support the day and contribute to spreading the word about human rights and their importance, such as taking an online pledge, sharing information on why human rights matter, and supporting human rights in everyday life. Back in 2014, young people from across Europe worked together on co-creating a declaration that expresses their views on creating a better internet. This initiative, called the Youth Manifesto, actually developed a set of digital rights that were most important for young people and it has been used on several occasions as a starting point for discussions on digital rights. This points out that we all need to be aware of our rights, but also get involved in actions and discussions that shape the way our rights are respected and preserved.
