Estonian Safer Internet Summer Camp seminar for children and youth

From 27-29 August 2019, the Estonian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) arranged, together with partners, a three-day summer-seminar-camp in Nelijärve Holiday Centre. The camp was targeted at children and youth who were interested in speaking on a variety of topics related to the digital world, and supporting conscious and safe behaviour of their peers and younger people on the internet.

Over the course of the three days, a total of 40 children created board games and a cybersecurity competition for students, they developed study-videos based on fairy tales covering topics such as how to manage e-commerce risks, and solved cases with classmates who act inappropriately online. The busy days were full of both brainstorming and outdoor activities, together with problem-solving exercises linked to creating a safer internet.

Birgy Lorenz, camp-organiser from TalTech, commented that it was particularly enjoyable to be part of this camp, and especially liked the fact that during the three days of the camp, the young people themselves were both participants and mentors. Two different age groups were involved in the camp - the cyber defence talents of the CyberSpike' Grand Championship, who took on the role of leader of the group. Acting as mentors to younger people, the young people developed their social and language skills especially - they needed to speak Estonian, Russian and English, and also explain things through computer technology and body language.

The Safer Internet's Summer Camp for Youth was supported by the European Commission, Hasartmängumaksu Nõukogu (Council of Hazard Game Taxes), the Estonian Union for Child Welfare, the Information Technology Foundation for Education, Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), the Estonian Internet Foundation and the Ministry of Defence.
