From photos taken out of context to illustrate the Youth for Climate protests in Luxembourg, to false information designed to prevent people from gathering in Hong Kong, disinformation is everywhere and comes in many forms. Although it is certainly not a new phenomenon, it is one that has become more serious since the emergence of new media.

Why has BEE SECURE chosen this topic for their awareness campaign?

The main goal of this new campaign is to develop a better understanding of the sources, intentions, tools and objectives behind disinformation. BEE SECURE aims to provide members of the general public with the information they need to be able to avoid and appropriately respond to disinformation online.

To this end, the campaign invites all internet users to systematically ask themselves the three following questions whenever they read or view information online:

  1. Who is hiding behind this information?
  2. Is the source of this information reliable?
  3. How is this subject presented by other sources?

When we verify the quality of the information we encounter online, we become better informed and able to share accurate information with those around us.

Understanding disinformation in one minute

To make BEE SECURE's message as clear as possible and to help people easily understand what disinformation is and does, a short video – available now – was created, which you can watch below.

The Luxembourg SIC has also created its first brochure on the topic, entitled "(Dis-)Inform: sense and nonsense". It answers essential questions related to disinformation (such as what it is, where, how and why it is shared, and so on).

The Luxembourg SIC would like to thank all partners for their support, particularly Zentrum fir politesch Bildung (ZpB), this year's primary partner.
