For this reason, the Commissioner strives to make children's online wellbeing a top priority at European level, and to turn the EU into a leader in this regard. To achieve this objective, she supports a significant amount of initiatives:
- The work of the network of European Safer Internet Centres (SICs), through awareness raising, helplines, hotlines and youth participation activities, benefits tens of thousands of children, young people, parents, educators and teachers.
- SICs, and other stakeholders, reach millions of citizens every year through awareness-raising activities, notably during Safer Internet Day (SID), a landmark event in the online safety calendar, which is now celebrated in more than 140 countries.
- The Alliance to Better Protect Minors Online, which is a self-regulatory initiative involving a variety of stakeholders (leading ICT and media companies, NGOs and UNICEF) aiming to address harmful content, harmful conduct and harmful contact online.
- The #SaferInternet4EU campaign, a EU-wide series of initiatives – including the #SaferInternet4EU Awards, a massive open online course (MOOC) on online safety for teachers, the Back2School campaign – promoting media literacy, cyber hygiene and online safety.
Upcoming initiatives include the European Cyber Security Month (ECSM) in October, EU Code Week from 6 to 21 October 2018, and the launch of a MOOC (massive open online course) for teachers on cyber hygiene, via the eTwinning platform.
