The Office of the eSafety Commissioner's CyberReport team was heavily involved in Australian efforts to support National Child Protection Week (NCPW) 2017. The aim of the week is to encourage Australian adults to consider how to all work together to keep children safe, including online. To promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people, the community was encouraged to play its part, and to reflect on the fact that protecting children is everyone's business.

Each year, the CyberReport team set themselves a high bar to conduct a record number of investigations into child sexual abuse material. With a small but dedicated team, CyberReport investigated over a thousand discrete URLs of child sexual abuse material, surpassing its previous record by mid-week and doubling the number of investigations conducted during NCPW in 2015. This set a record for the amount of investigations the team has ever conducted in a week, and translated to nearly 4,700 images depicting more than 2,000 victims.

Many of the pages investigated tracked visitor views, and the CyberReport team estimate that its efforts prevented over 46,000,000 page views per day. This incredible figure underscores the role played by INHOPE in preventing the re-victimisation of those depicted in child abuse content. It also stands as a reminder of the important role that all hotlines play in preventing the spread of child abuse material online – and making the internet a safer place for all.
