New BIK Teacher corner launched on Safer Internet Day 2023

On Safer Internet Day (SID) 2023, Better Internet for Kids (BIK) launched a new Teacher corner. The BIK Teacher corner is a special section of the Better Internet for Kids website and is meant for teachers, educators and other adults who work with children and young people. There they can find free information, advice, and suggested resources to help to educate and support youth to safely and positively navigate their digital world.

The overall objective of the BIK Teacher corner is to become a one-stop shop and a point of reference for European primary and secondary teachers and educators. It provides a mix of easy-to-digest topical information and hands-on tips and guidance on the evolving nature and range of potentially harmful content, contact, conduct and contract risks that children and young people may experience in the digital world.

This is combined with more in-depth opportunities for learning, exploring key topics in more detail, with consideration of the available research evidence, established pedagogical principles and practices, and more elaborate opportunities for interactive exchange on how to develop and assess (cross-)curricular activities from an early age onwards, while making sure risks and opportunities in a digital world are taken into account when school policies and procedures are being designed.

BIK Teacher corner

In the BIK Teacher Corner, teachers and educators can find everything needed to better understand the digital worlds and experiences of young people. A range of learning modules are provided to ensure they have the knowledge required to understand the risks and opportunities that accompany the digital experiences of youth, and to help them develop the skills to support children to manage and benefit from these experiences.

These resources are split into two key types: learning modules and deep dives.

Learning modules provide teachers and educators with a broad knowledge base to understand the opportunities, risks and educational approaches related to digital citizenship and online safety. Across the resources, teachers and educators will develop an understanding of how to protect, empower and respect children and young people online. They will learn about the key online safety risks that can affect the safety and well-being of youth online, explore how children’s rights apply to the digital world, and will gain a greater understanding of why children and young people value the use of digital technology and the internet so highly.

Deep-dive articles provide teachers and educators with more in-depth information, advice and resources to understand specific topics/areas of risk, such as cyberbullying, sexting and misinformation. New topics will be added on a regular basis.

Safer Internet Day 2023

The BIK Teacher Corner was launched to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2023. Every year in February, millions of people around the world join forces “Together for a better internet” to celebrate Safer Internet Day. The day promotes the responsible, respectful, critical and creative use of digital technologies with the goal of fostering a better internet for all. This year marked the 20th edition of the day.
