Advice for schools on responding to online challenges

Online challenges and crazes have become a key trend to be aware of when supporting and educating young people about how to stay safe online. Challenges come in many forms and can involve upsetting, harmful or viral content. Over the last few years we have seen a range of online challenges. Some, such as the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge and the No Makeup Selfie, can promote and raise money for great causes. However, other challenges such as "pain challenges", and "Neck Nominate" videos can harm young people and adults who take part. It is important that – whether a challenge is rumoured or real – educators have the tools they need and are ready to deal with such challenges and are able to support young people.

Safer Internet Day 2019 in Portugal: Online for human rights

The Portuguese Safer Internet Centre (SIC) commemorated Safer Internet Day (SID) 2019 by promoting a series of activities and resources. The planning started early to organise an event called "Online for human rights" which encountered a wide audience, both among the general public and among policymakers who have an influence on the internet governance sphere in the country. As Thorbjorn Jagland, the Secretary General for the Council of Europe put it, "hate speech has become one of the most common forms of intolerance and xenophobia in Europe today (…) When the unacceptable starts to be accepted, becomes "the norm", there is a true threat to human rights".

The Better Internet for Kids (BIK) and #SaferInternet4EU review of the year 2018 was released on Tuesday, 5 February 2019, on the occasion of Safer Internet Day (SID). Safer Internet Ambassadors Programme in Latvia

Since August 2017, the Latvian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) implements the Safer Internet Ambassadors Programme to educate and inform children, parents and teachers in Latvia's regions about the internet safety more efficiently. 32 Safer Internet Ambassadors are taking an active part in this programme all over Latvia.

Digital Leaders in action

The Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs) recently met for a training meeting in Manchester, UK. Such meetings aim to facilitate experience and good-practice sharing across the network on a range of topical online safety issues, while continuing to enhance the collaborative learning community that has developed within the network. A regular feature of training meetings is the opportunity to see good practice "in the field", often visiting a local school or similar to see online safety education and awareness raising in action.
