German youth play their part for a better internet

On the occasion of Safer Internet Day (SID) 2016, we asked our youth panellists how they would be marking the day. Here, Helen, Julia and Leonie, from a grammar school in Ladenburg, Germany, tell us about their plans.

"Safer Internet Day activities and events in Germany are organised by klicksafe. This year's focus is on ‘extreme online behavior' with the main topics being ‘hate speech' and ‘extreme use of mobile phones and online devices'. We have a big press conference in Berlin where a politician, a famous YouTuber, a media-literacy expert and an actress will be talking about these topics. For more information, visit the klicksafe SID website.

"On Safer Internet Day, 9 February 2016, it's school holidays in Germany, that's why the youth panel team at our school has organised an event which will take place a week later: a movie night in our auditorium, to which every pupil is invited.

"We'll be showing a film titled ‘homevideo'. The story is about a boy who gets bullied by his friends, who publish a private, intimate video on the internet to humiliate him. After the film is shown, we'll talk about the topic of cyberbullying, we'll introduce ourselves as mediascouts (our job is to help when somebody gets bullied) and we'll also present the Cyber Bullying First Aid App from the klicksafe Youth Panel. You can download the German version of the app here. The English version will be available in April.

"Happy SID to all of you from Germany!"
