The next edition of Safer Internet Day (SID) will take place on Tuesday, 7 February 2017 with a theme of ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet'. As we get closer to the date, we're happy to hear from both the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs) in Europe and global Safer Internet Day Committees about their initiatives to raise awareness of the campaign. Here, we hear from our Portuguese Safer Internet Centre.

In a recent event entitled ‘Marca a Diferença por uma Internet Melhor' (Be the change for a better internet), the Portuguese Safer Internet Centre launched a range of new, accessible resources which include audio description, sign language and Portuguese and English subtitles.

Net com Consciência (Net with conscience) is the newest resource produced by the Portuguese Safer Internet Centre which addresses young people's online behaviour. This resource, consisting of 10 videos, aims to promote safer and more responsible use of the internet, while also encouraging young people to report any harmful content they encounter online to the Portuguese SIC hotline and helpline organisations.

Thinking about young people with special needs, this web series was adapted to include audio descriptions, Portuguese sign language, and Portuguese and English subtitles. One of the key priorities of the Portuguese SIC is to facilitate access to digital content by any person, in any context.

The Portuguese actors Alexandre Silva, Pedro Górgia and Tiago Aldeia, who play the roles of ‘online consciences' in the web series, were present at the launch of the resource. The event also included the presentation of the new helpline awareness spot which will be airing on national television.
