Youth representatives attend national meeting on actions against violence

Members of the youth panel of the Icelandic Safer Internet Centre (SIC) were given the opportunity to take part in a national meeting on actions against violence last January, hosted by the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Social Welfare and Housing.

The Ministries agreed, in December 2014, to work together on a joint strategy on actions against violence and its consequences for society, in close cooperation with social services, child protection agencies, the police and prosecution, partners in the education and healthcare systems and various NGOs. A joint statement outlined that they were determined to fight against violence and its devastating effects in Icelandic society, increase prevention efforts and raise awareness on the issue, increase cooperation across agencies, update protocols and reinvigorate police investigations on violent crime.

Youth representatives reported that the meeting was interesting in many ways: how the processing time of medical reports can effect when defendants are received for adjudication, and how different opening hours of clubs and pubs and improved transportation from them to the suburbs have reduced queuing and crowding and violent confrontations. The meeting also discussed the importance of educating youth on how to assess personal boundaries in society, raise their awareness of sexual and physical violence, and the importance of promoting nonviolent conflict resolution.
