Facebook allows users to be marked safe during Brussels explosions

A tragic series of explosions have taken place at Zaventem Airport and the metro network in Brussels this morning. At this stage, the official number of casualties is unknown, but it is estimated to be around 23 dead and several more injured.

The airport has been shut down and all flights diverted. The metro, tram, and bus systems have also been shut down citywide and Brussels is currently under the maximum level of alert. The police state that they feared such repercussions after Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in last year's Paris attacks, was arrested in Belgium last week
 
Facebook, which connects over 1.5 billion people across the world, has launched the Facebook Safety Check allowing users to mark themselves and their friends safe during the Brussels explosions. This feature has been made available by Facebook in previous crisis situations, such as during the Paris terror attacks in November 2015.
