In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the issue of freedom of expression. Freedom of expression implies respect for the opinion of others. It recognises the fact that there is a difference between us and our opinions. To celebrate freedom of expression is to celebrate diversity. Freedom of the press is an essential aspect of the freedom of expression. Without a free and independent communication landscape, it is impossible to build and sustain a democratic society. 3 May is also nominated as Difference Day, celebrating freedom of expression and honouring people and organisations that make a difference in protecting and promoting these values. See the Difference Day website for further information. Here on the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) portal, we’ll be looking at issues around freedom of expression online in support of the day. Come back nearer the time to read more. And if you’re marking the day in some way linked to the Better Internet for Kids agenda, why not share an article with us - see our content contribution guidelines, or get in touch for more information.
