About the organisation

The Hungarian Safer Internet Centre exists to promote a safer and better use of the internet and mobile technologies among children and young people.

Awareness centre

Description:

Hungarian International Children's Safety Service logo

In the course of the "Surf Safely!" lessons, we cover topics which play a significant part in our everyday life such as the protection of personal data, cyberbullying, netiquette, passwords, digital footprints, and so on. Our interactive lessons for children comprise short videos and small exercises, whereas parents and teachers are introduced to the topics in a more serious learning environment.

We work with more than 50 trainers who are dedicated experts in these respective fields and have great experience in the field of safer internet. Many of them, as representatives of IT companies, work as volunteers in the project, resulting from the fact that many of the supporting firms are multinational companies where volunteering and social responsibility is highly emphasised.

Helpline

Description:

Hungarian Kek Vonal logo

The activities of the Kek Vonal Child Crisis Foundation within the project are:

  • To operate the nationwide internet helpline service 24/7 including a telephone helpline service, email service through the kek-vonal.hu website (called EMIL), and a chat service also through the website.
  • To carry on the promotion tasks in order to raise the visibility of the service among the target groups, to raise awareness about the online risks that children can be exposed to, and to highlight the importance of prevention.
  • To carry out "offline" activities, such as a school visit programme and participation at public events.

Our Foundation, within this project, helps children who are victims of cyberbullying, grooming, sexting or who have faced illegal or harmful content.

Parents and teachers are also able to find help through our channels (email, chat and telephone) on internet safety issues.

Hotline

Description:

Hungarian Hotline logo

The Hotline was established as a part of the Safer Internet Plus project as a partner of the Hungarian Saferinternet.hu consortium. The project is supported by the European Commission. The categories of illegal and harmful content that the hotline handles are the following:

  • Child sexual abuse images (pictures, videos).
  • Grooming and cyberbullying.
  • Harmful and violent content.
  • Racial hatred content.
  • Enticement for drug consumption.
  • Content harmfully published without owner's permission.
  • Other harmful content.

The main goal of the hotline is to take down harmful content as soon as possible. Harmful content can be defined as any kind of website or online video, picture, and text, which can be detrimental for the growth of the young generation. The Theodore Puskas Foundation's main objective is to minimise these threats and take down all these content or restrict them from the children. To achieve these goals, we are working together with the Hungarian police, ISPs (internet service providers), and members of the INHOPE Association.

Key successes

One of the main activities of the Safer Internet Programme is awareness-raising among users. Since 2010, the International Children's Safety Service (ICSS) as the awareness centre of the Hungarian Safer Internet Consortium, has organised free "Surf Safely!" lessons in many schools, cultural centres and other institutions all over Hungary. In the last five years we have visited nearly 500 institutions, being able to personally reach more than 70,000 children and parents. Among others, our clients include schools, libraries, public institutions, cultural centres and police units. We also appear at important events such as Children's Day and the Sziget Music Festival to spread the ideas of safer internet use.

Key partners/supporters

The Hungarian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) gets support from the state of Hungary through tenders, the National Bank, merchant banks (OTP), electricity providers (MVM, ELMÅ°), IT companies (SAP, HP, Balabit) and other individuals and companies.
