Safe and Healthy Online Practices awareness campaign

The Portuguese Safer Internet Centre is promoting the "Safe and Healthy Online Practices" awareness campaign to alert children and young people to the safe and healthy use of mobile devices, particularly laptops distributed by the Digital school program. These devices are valuable tools for learning, but it is essential to adopt practices that promote healthy and productive use.

This campaign includes an awareness brochure and an image gallery for students and families.

Parents, guardians, and families are encouraged to:

  • Set usage time limits and establish specific schedules for using laptops and other devices, such as after school or during study time. It is also recommended to avoid using them before bedtime to promote good rest.
  • Promote digital citizenship education: raising awareness among children and young people about online risk behaviours, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate sharing of personal information, and interaction with strangers.
  • Balance online time with offline activities, such as sports, reading, outdoor play, and face-to-face social interactions.
  • Encourage using laptops for educational purposes like research, school projects, and online learning.
  • Emphasise the importance of proper posture when using devices and encourage regular breaks to avoid physical problems.
  • Alert about responsible sharing of information and images online, always bearing in mind the importance of respecting privacy.
  • Be a positive role model for online behaviour, demonstrating responsible and respectful use of technology.
  • Maintain an open dialogue with students so they feel comfortable reporting any online problems or discomfort.
  • Encourage the use of laptops in a shared area of the house to facilitate easier monitoring of activities.
  • Encourage educational and constructive online activities to enhance the quality of screen time.
  • Use support services such as the Linha Internet Segura Helpline.

Together, let us create a safe and healthy environment, balancing the benefits of technology with digital responsibility.
