Jan De Craemer, from the Flemish Ministry of Education, opened the conference by highlighting the importance of eSafety in education and how the eSafety Label project supports schools in building a safer ICT infrastructure, while developing their online safety policies and practices. Following this introduction, the eSafety Label Coordination Team, led by European Schoolnet, explained how schools can participate and join the community, giving an overview of current school involvement from across Europe. Experts from national organisations and initiatives such as Child Focus
shared a variety of online safety tools and resources, while several ICT coordinators talked about their experience in trying to become an eSafety-certified school.
The eSafety Label is a project of European Schoolnet
and was developed in collaboration with a number of leading ICT companies and education ministries across Europe.
Schools can review their own eSafety practices against internationally-agreed standards. When they put forward evidence of their practice, they can be accredited as an eSafety-certified school. On completion of the self-assessment process, they will receive a personalised action plan to enable them to develop further their level of eSafety practice. They can also see where their school stands compared to other schools in their own country and abroad.
The associated eSafety Label portal provides schools with an ever-growing set of resources: eSafety advice and guidance, fact sheets, checklists and templates.
In the community, users and experts can exchange tips, resources, advice and information on eSafety issues, help each other, and share examples of effective practice.
The eSafety Label is intended for all educational institutions from primary to secondary education. To participate schools should register on the portal www.esafetylabel.eu
Currently over 2,500 teachers have joined the community, while over the years around 740 labels have been awarded.
