Slovenia: webinars on online safety for parents

Slovenian awareness centre Safe.si organised two webinars for parents in September and October 2020. This format allows to reach parents in times of COVID-19, when there are strict rules on organising lectures in schools, or even when the whole country is in lockdown.

Both webinars were called "Safe on the Internet with Safe.si" and the topic was the safe use of the internet for parents. The first webinar was organised for parents of children from the seventh grade to the end of secondary school, and the second one was for parents of primary school children, up to the sixth grade. The lectures were given by the centre’s lecturers Tjaša Jerman Kuželički and Ph.D. Benjamin Lesjak.

Webinar participants were able to submit questions upon registration and both lecturers adapted the content accordingly. The general idea was to talk mainly about distance learning, but the questions submitted showed that parents are very interested in other topics as well.

The highest number of questions for both webinars was about parental controls. The questions submitted indicated a great desire from parents to use technical solutions to protect their children and a lack of understanding of the fact that digital technologies are not the panacea in this regard.

Other topics were about screen time, the age of first use of social media, and how to protect children’s privacy online. There were also some questions on how to coordinate the use of the internet if there are children of different ages in the family and some questions about distance learning.

Both seminars started at 6:00 PM, as one-hour livestreams on YouTube. Parents liked that they were able to start watching later if they were busy at the beginning. In the evaluation of the webinars, some parents pointed out that the webinar should have been later, as they were busy with other things, but they praised possibility of watching the recording later in the evening.

The webinar for parents of older children was held in September and received 286 live views, with 409 parents watching the recording later. Regarding the webinar for parents of children up to sixth grade held in October, it received 402 live views and later in the evening another 573 views of the recording. The recording of both webinars is available on YouTube.
