#SaferInternet4EU campaign

***The year-long #SaferInternet4EU campaign was launched on Safer Internet Day 2018, to promote online safety, media literacy and cyber-hygiene. The content of the campaign is preserved here for information purposes only.***

On Safer Internet Day (SID) 2018 (Tuesday, 6 February), Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, launched an EU-wide series of initiatives entitled #SaferInternet4EU at an event at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Although the campaign has now concluded, this page provides some background on its actions and successes.

Throughout 2018, a range of #SaferInternet4EU initiatives reached children, young people, parents, teachers, and other EU citizens to help them to become empowered and responsible digital users. It covered a wide range of topics, such as critical thinking, media literacy and digital skills necessary to identify and combat fake news and the risks brought by emerging online technologies and connected devices; and provide tips on cyber hygiene.

A number of initiatives launched as part of the campaign, including:

  • a European contest to reward high-quality resources and inspiring initiatives pursuing Better Internet for Kids objectives. The competition covered three categories: professionals, teachers and youth.

  • a massive open online course (MOOC) on child online safety with resources and activities for online learning in particular on fake news, cyberbullying and radicalisation. The course lasted six weeks and contained a range of activities and resources for online learning, targetting schools across Europe.
The initiatives focused on young people being given a voice and active roles in shaping the online environment. Industry, civil society, parents, carers, educators, were also involved.

A network of national #SaferInternet4EU Ambassadors was also set up.
