Research partners are key stakeholders in the Better Internet for Kids agenda, providing a body of knowledge and evidence on issues affecting children and young people online today. Armed with this knowledge, we are able to identify emerging trends and shape appropriate responses and create effective resources for the challenges presented.

Responding to online risks to children and young people in vulnerable groups

The new European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids (BIK+ strategy), adopted in May 2022, emphasises the need to pay careful attention to children with special or specific needs, or from disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds. In the new strategy, the European Commission sets out clear priorities for young people with a range of vulnerabilities, with the overarching aim to ensure that no one is left behind, and that all children and young people have a voice when it comes to matters in the digital sphere.

One year of BIK+

Exactly one year ago, on 11 May 2022, the European Commission adopted a new European strategy for a Better Internet for Kids (BIK+), to improve age-appropriate digital services and to ensure that every child is protected, empowered and respected online. Digital well-being for Safer Internet Day 2023 in Germany

Safer Internet Day (SID) 2023 was celebrated worldwide on 7 February. In Germany, the day was held under the motto #OnlineAmLimit (“#OnlineAtTheLimit”). As the coordinator of the activities for this international day in Germany, klicksafe thus focused on the topics of digital balance and digital well-being. CO:RE launches the Education Toolkit

The Education Toolkit was developed by the CO:RE team at European Schoolnet in an extensive consultation process and co-creation workshops with teachers, practitioner, but also young people. The result is a comprehensive toolkit with relevant information and many helpful resources.

New study on young people and fake news for Safer Internet Day 2023

As this 2017 survey on fake news carried out by the Austrian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) firstly indicated, in 2023 online media and social networks are the most important source of information for young people on everyday topics. However, they hardly trust the information found there – this is what the Austrian SIC latest study shows.

Digital dilemmas cannot be solved by parents alone

Children have the right to freedom of expression, participation and information, privacy and protection against harmful content. There are obviously many dilemmas that come with this for parents and carers. When is the right time to give your child their first smartphone? Which apps and services should your child have access to and at what age? What about the risk of encountering inappropriate or harmful content? This was the focus topic for Safer Internet Day 2023 in Norway.
